The Backpack, The Biscuit, and The Big Feelings

The other day, I was in the supermarket, surrounded by all the back-to-school paraphernalia.


We endured 20+ years of back-to-school prep in our house, but last year that all changed as we decided to home educate.


My oldest two are now working, leaving me to prepare for our home learning for the year ahead - one with a little more space and a lot more… us-time.

For some of you, the back-to-school frenzy is a well-oiled machine. You've had the uniforms and stationery sorted since June.

For most, it’s a beautifully organised chaos, a mad dash of uniform-checking and book-bag-packing, all while trying to remember where you put the last-minute label maker. It's a rite of passage, this end-of-summer whirlwind.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this time of year, especially now that I'm on a different path. What I've realised is that the stress isn't just about the stuff - the new shoes, the PE kit, the school supply list. It's about the big, beautiful, sometimes-scary feelings that come with change.

This month, I want to share some of my favourite ways to turn that back-to-school chaos into a little more calm.

It’s about more than just getting the gear sorted; it’s about nurturing relationships and creating safe spaces for everyone to share. When people grow, everything changes.


A Cup of Tea and a Chat:

One of the most powerful things we can do is simply talk. Sit down with your child, with a "hug in a mug" and a biscuit, and just listen. Ask them what they're excited about, but also what they're a bit worried about. Maybe they’re scared they won’t know anyone in their class, or they’re worried about a teacher mispronouncing their name. These things matter to little minds.

When you help a child name their fear, it’s like bringing a boogeyman out of the dark. Suddenly, it's not a monster anymore - it's a manageable problem. This simple act is foundational for building trust and open communication, and it's a core part of the SENSE framework: Creating safe spaces to share.

The Power of Predictable Playfulness:

Routines can feel a bit rigid, can't they? They don’t have to be. Think of them as anchors. Getting the uniform out the night before, making a "First Day of School" breakfast that's just for them, or having a special phrase you say at the door… these small rituals are like little life rafts in a sea of change.

For children, especially those with autism or ADHD, a predictable rhythm helps their brains feel safe.

According to research, a consistent routine helps regulate the body’s cortisol levels, which means less stress for everyone. A little Playfulness can turn a chore into a chance to connect, and a routine into a ritual.

Finding Your Own Calm:

It’s not just about the kids; it’s about you, too. Think of that moment when you’re about to put on your oxygen mask on a plane before helping others. Taking care of your well-being is the same. Maybe it's a few minutes of quiet with that cuppa, a walk outside, or even a moment to do some journaling.

By modelling how to manage stress with a bit of grace, you're teaching them a powerful lesson in Acceptance and Empathy. You’re not just telling them how to be resilient; you’re showing them.

Collaboration, Not Control: You don’t have to do it all alone. Leaning on your village - other parents, a teacher you trust, or even a friend who's been there - is a sign of strength, not weakness.

The back-to-school journey is just that - a journey. It has its bumps and its triumphs. With a little bit of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy, we can navigate it together.
