The Huge Bag of Worries

By Viginia Ironside

Imagine carrying a big, heavy bag everywhere they go. It's filled with things you can't see, but you can feel the weight of it in their shoulders, in their quietness, in their little outbursts. This is the weight of worry, and it's something so many of us, big and small, carry every day.

This story is more than just a tale; it's a gentle invitation to talk about the things that weigh on our hearts. One of the most powerful activities we can do after reading it is to make the feeling of worry tangible.

You'll need a bag and a few potatoes. As you talk with your child, have them put a potato into the bag for each worry they have.

**"I'm worried about the test at school." Plop. "I'm worried about my friend." Plop. "I'm worried about sleeping alone." Plop, plop, plop. **

Just like Jenny, your child will physically feel the bag getting heavier. This simple act gives them a real-life sense of how those tiny worries add up and weigh us down.

Then, here’s the magic part. Start a conversation about talking about their worries. As they share a worry with you, have them take one potato out of the bag.

**“Thank you for sharing that with me. It’s safe to let that go now.” Plop. **

Watch their face as the bag gets lighter, one potato at a time. The physical and emotional relief is incredible. It shows them that when we share our burdens with people we trust, we feel lighter and happier. It’s a beautiful, gentle lesson in the power of connection and vulnerability.

Remember, when people grow, everything changes.
